When a toilet clog needs a professional
- The toilet will not flush after several tries with a flange plunger
- Water rises close to the rim every time you flush
- The same toilet clogs every week or two
- Flushing causes gurgling in the tub or bubbles in a nearby sink
- More than one toilet in the house is clogging
- An object like a toy, phone or cleaning tool went down the toilet
First steps when a toilet will not flush
If the water is rising, take the lid off the tank and push the flapper down to stop more water from entering the bowl, then turn the shutoff valve behind the toilet clockwise. Do not keep flushing to see if it clears; that is how bathrooms flood.
A flange plunger, the kind with an extra rubber sleeve on the bottom, works much better on toilets than a flat sink plunger. Make sure there is enough water in the bowl to cover the cup. Start with a gentle push to seat the plunger and push the air out without splashing, then use firm, steady strokes. If a few minutes of plunging does not help, the clog is probably beyond the trapway, and more force is likely to cause a mess rather than fix anything.
What causes toilet clogs
- Wipes, including those labeled flushable, which do not break apart the way toilet paper does
- Paper towels, tissues and feminine products
- Too much toilet paper in a low-flow toilet that uses less water per flush
- Small objects dropped in by children or knocked off the tank
- Mineral buildup in the trapway and rim holes of older toilets
- Main line problems such as roots or a sagging pipe, which slow everything leaving the house
When toilets clog often, especially more than one in the house, the toilet itself is rarely the issue. That points toward cleaning the sewer line or a look inside it with a drain camera.
How we clear a clogged toilet
Toilet auger
A closet auger has a guarded end designed to limit scratching as it travels through the curved trapway. It breaks up or retrieves most blockages inside the toilet itself.
Pulling the toilet
If an object is stuck or the clog is past the trapway, we may need to remove the toilet from the floor. That gives direct access to the drain below and lets us retrieve items that an auger cannot grab. We reset the toilet with a new wax ring.
Clearing the line
When the drain past the toilet is the problem, we clear it through the toilet flange or a nearby cleanout using the right size cable.
How to prevent repeat toilet clogs
The simplest rule: only toilet paper and human waste go in the toilet. Keep a small trash can in each bathroom so wipes and other products have somewhere else to go. If you have a low-flow toilet and clogs are frequent, using less paper per flush, or flushing twice for large loads, helps. And if you hear gurgling in other fixtures when you flush, mention it when you call; it can be an early sign of a main line issue that is easier to deal with before it becomes a backup. When the reason for repeat clogs is not obvious, our clogged drain diagnosis service is a good fit.
Toilet Clog Removal in Long Beach, step by step
- 1
Get the details
We ask whether one or more toilets are affected, whether anything was dropped in, and if other fixtures are acting up.
- 2
Auger the toilet
We use a toilet auger to clear the trapway while protecting the bowl.
- 3
Go further if needed
If the clog is past the toilet, we pull it or use a cleanout to clear the drain line.
- 4
Test and reset
We flush several times to confirm normal flow, check for leaks at the base and explain what caused the clog.
Low-flow toilets on older lines in Los Altos and Park Estates
Many mid-century homes in Los Altos and Park Estates have had their toilets replaced with modern low-flow models while the original drain lines stayed in place. Newer toilets use much less water per flush, and older cast iron lines with rough, scaled walls may need more water to carry waste all the way to the street. The result can be a toilet that clogs more often than the old one did.
If a newer toilet clogs regularly in one of these homes, the fix is not always the toilet. Cleaning the line, and sometimes checking it with a camera, shows whether buildup or a low spot in the pipe is catching waste.
