Signs your bathroom sink needs cleaning
- Water pools in the basin while you brush your teeth or wash your face
- Water drains, but slowly, even with the stopper fully open
- A musty or sewer smell coming from the sink drain
- The pop-up stopper is stuck or will not close and open properly
- Gurgling as the sink drains
- Two sinks in the same bathroom both draining slowly
What builds up in a bathroom sink drain
Bathroom sinks do not see grease like kitchen sinks, but they collect a different kind of mess:
- Hair that wraps around the stopper rod and catches everything else
- Soap and toothpaste that leave a sticky film on the pipe walls
- Shaving cream, lotions and makeup that thicken the buildup
- Small items like caps, jewelry or cotton swabs that drop into the drain
- Mineral scale that roughens the pipe and gives debris something to cling to
Because the drain opening and trap are small, it does not take much for the flow to slow down noticeably.
How we clear a bathroom sink
Stopper and drain body
We start by removing and cleaning the pop-up stopper, where a large share of hair and gunk collects. If the stopper mechanism is worn or broken, we will let you know.
Trap and wall line
Next we check the trap and, if the clog is further in, run a small drain cable through the branch line in the wall. This is where buildup tends to hide when a sink stays slow after the stopper is cleaned.
Overflow and testing
The overflow channel near the top of the basin can hold residue that causes odors. We flush it and then fill and drain the basin to confirm the sink empties properly.
When it is more than one bathroom fixture
If the sink, tub and toilet in the same bathroom all drain poorly, the blockage is probably in the shared branch line rather than the sink itself, and clearing just the sink will not solve it. We look at the whole bathroom group in that case. Our shower and bathtub drain cleaning and toilet clog removal pages explain how those fixtures fit into the picture.
Odors without a clog can point to a dry trap in a rarely used sink or a venting problem. Running water in guest bathrooms once in a while keeps the trap seal full.
Simple habits for a fast-draining sink
- Use a drain screen or a stopper with a hair catcher.
- Pull the stopper and wipe it off every few weeks.
- Rinse the basin after using thick products like toothpaste or shaving cream.
- Keep cotton swabs, floss and caps out of the sink.

Bathroom sinks in Belmont Heights and Bluff Park homes
Some older homes in Belmont Heights and Bluff Park still have original or partly original bathroom plumbing. Where the branch lines are small-diameter galvanized steel or cast iron, they can narrow from the inside as they corrode, which keeps a vanity slow even after a good cleaning. If we see signs of that, we will tell you so you can plan for it.
Remodeled bathrooms in these neighborhoods sometimes have new fixtures connected to old pipe in the wall. The trap and the visible parts look new, but the slowdown is happening in the older section behind them.
